Policy

Advocates for Women’s and Kids’ Equality (AWAKE) advocates for the advancement of women and kids by effecting local and state policy and is guided by three principles: educate, advocate, change. This organization was founded in 2013. They work on more than just gender-based violence, but so far that has a focus. In the past two years they have lobbied two DV bills (passed), one bill focused on sex workers (passed), and one relating to children’s health (did not pass).

Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence a private nonprofit focused on ending violence in the lives of Tennesseans through public policy, advocacy, education and activities that increase the capacity of programs and communities to address violence.

Tennessee Economic Council on Women (TECW) is a state-funded organization whose purpose is to assess the economic status of women in Tennessee in order to develop and advocate for solutions that will address their economic needs and promote economic autonomy. The Council’s areas of study include, but are not limited to: employment policies and practices, educational needs and opportunities, child care, property rights, health care, domestic relations, and the effect of federal and state laws on women. In 2014, they launched Violence Against Women Resource Center TN, a database which includes contact information for domestic and sexual violence service providers throughout the state.
